10 Worst Things About Summer

21 Jul

We are halfway done with summer…actually, more than halfway done.  We’ve had some great weather (here in Chicago) as well as some not-so-great weather.  Some pretty horrible storms, but also some days where you wake up and realize just how happy you are to be alive and live in Chicago…best city in the world.  There’s something about summer, with tanned skin, lightened hair, sunshine, rainbows when it rains, outdoor activities, BBQ’s with friends, Cubs games, that makes it really unbecoming to complain about summer.  In the winter we can complain about the cold, the ice on the roads, the lack of sunshine, the grumpiness of those who are stuck inside, that make it more acceptable to complain.  Though, it’s not always becoming to complain, but it does happen.  So, I was tickled when someone sent me this article, which was from last year about the 10 Worst Things About Summer. 🙂

Enjoy!  My comments in RED.

10 Worst Things About Summer from Pure Wow

Have you ever noticed that it’s totally socially unacceptable to complain about summer? (It’s like saying you hate puppies…or Beyoncé.) Well, here at PureWow, we’re all about breaking taboos. Presenting, the ten worst things about everyone else’s favorite season.  I think Kate Middleton is so much more interesting and much more beautiful than Beyonce.  Of course Beyonce is lovely and talented, but all this “breaking the internet”?  I don’t get it.

The 10 Worst Things About Summer

1. Sitting on a city bench in really short shorts.  Or sitting anywhere on a Bleacher.

The 10 Worst Things About Summer

2. Your coworker who’s trying natural deodorant.  I have Never understood the obsession with “natural deodorant”.  Which is an oxymoron, btw.

The 10 Worst Things About Summer

3. Firing up the grill and realizing you’re out of propane. This has happened to us numerous times.  We solved this problem by forking out the cash to own 2 Propanes.  Then realized one Propane had the wrong attachment, so we couldn’t use it.  $60 down the drain, or taken to the land of Propanes that no longer work.

The 10 Worst Things About Summer

4. Hot-dog legs.  The 2013’s called, they want these stupid pictures back.

The 10 Worst Things About Summer

5. Discovering that “rustic cabana” means “unair-conditioned”.  Un airconditioned is the worst phrase, ever.

The 10 Worst Things About Summer

6. That spot you missed on your lower back.  Tanning beds are Not good for you…

The 10 Worst Things About Summer

7. Walking outside and immediately getting pit stains. Light blue shirts (or dresses) are the absolute worst!

The 10 Worst Things About Summer

8. Beach traffic. Cubs traffic.

The 10 Worst Things About Summer

9. Water parks. John Pinette’s bit on water parks, is one of the funniest comedic skits, ever.

The 10 Worst Things About Summer

10. The sound of the ice cream truck. (Admit it: It’s driving you to an early grave.) I was leaving a fabulous event, given by Loews Hotels, and there was a Good Humor truck outside the hotel.  Nothing says Summer like an ice cream truck.  I don’t think one has ever been on Polo Dr. #FirstWorldProblems

Winners of the And You Get a Book Blog, will have their books being shipped today! No, I did not finish them all, so sending some even though I haven’t read. I thought I’d be able to read more than I have by now… Not so much!  Megan, Carol, Jane, Lee and Rita…Enjoy!

Hope you are having a great summer!  I know I am!

Summer is upon us and for me that means gathering books for my summer reading list.  Be it at the Beach, Vacation, Home or on my Deck…I have Big Plans to rifle through many books this summer.

1. Talking as Fast as I Can by Lauren Graham.  Loved Gilmore Girls and loved Parenthood.  Reading Talking as fast as I can now.

2. Teammate, My Journey in Baseball and a World Series for the Ages by David Ross.  You can never get too much Cubs winning the World Series!

4. The Beach House by Jane Green – I love beach houses and love Jane Green.

5. Remember Me? by Sophie Kinsella – Sophie Kinsella is one of my favorite authors!

6. After You: A Novel by Jojo Moyes – I loved the movie, Me Before You, about the book by Jojo Moyes… I hope to read all of her books.

7.  Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom – I’ve read this book twice and plan on reading it for a third time.  It’s about Morrie Schwartz, who had an impactful impression on the author, Mitch Albom.  Morrie has ALS.  Enough said.

8. The life-changing magic of tidying up by Marie Kondo – I skim this book often and will continue to skim it, to  get more organizing ideas.

9. One plus one, by Jojo Moyes – Another Jojo book!

10. Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberly McCreight – I have had this book for at least 3 years and looking forward to reading it.

11.  All the light we cannot see by Anthony Doerr – Two of my favorite friends have told me this is one of their all-time favorite books.  It’s been on my nightstand waiting to be read.  I shall do that this summer.

More Beach Reads/Suggestions

That I am!  Happy reading!

And What a Summer it Was!

12 Sep

It seems like just yesterday I had the entire summer ahead of me.  It was middle of May and I was waiting for Patrick’s arrival home from his first year at Miami University. To me, that was going to be the beginning of summer. So much to look forward to!  Family. Friends. Fun!  It was going to be the beginning of the Best. Summer. Ever!

Now, I am looking back in the rear view mirror at Summer.  Where did summer go?  Where did my great abs in 30-days go?  Here is just a small sampling of my summer.  And what a Summer it was!!

Several fun jaunts to the race track…We even had days which we won.  One day we were winning even though we were betting on the wrong race for three races!  #Winning #OnlyUs

Games of Uno and Uno Attack.  Probably played over 100 games. 🙂  Truly, one of my very favorite memories of summer.  Reverse, reverse!  Skip, skip, skip to my Lou!  You had to be there.  I’m looking forward to Patrick coming home to play some more. #RockStarLife

Quick trip to Cancun – ‘Twas a quick business trip, but had fun, fun, fun.  Eat, drink and be Terry!

It was a summer of Lilly Pulitzer dresses… and not just by me! Mary was on the same bandwagon.

Fun trip to West Palm Beach, where I was treated like a Rock Star thanks to my friend, PMH!  Nothing like having a car pick you up at the airport with a bottle of Sonoma Cutrer Chardonnay chilling in the car.  Fabulous way to start a fabulous weekend!

Hanging with friends.  Old and new!

Got to meet my new style idol, India Hicks!  She is just about the coolest person ever… and in trying to remain “cool”, I  chose not to have my picture taken with her. Hindsight being 20/20… we know I’m not that cool.  Should have gotten that picture!  I want to be her when I grow up!

Noodling around in a pool more times than I can count on one hand!! Probably one of my favorite summer activities. Enjoyed Bloody Mary’s each time.  It was 5:00 somewhere.  Or 11AM! 🙂  It’s important to note that bouncing around a pool on a noodle, does not accumulate steps on your Fitbit tracker. #WhoKnew?

Cubs game with my #SoleSister.  It’s our year!!  I’m speaking of the Cubs.  It’s always Tracy and my year.  Always.

Late Summer trip to San Diego

Always one of my favorite vacation pictures.  Morning coffee with a view.

Vacation on the balcony. I’ve come to realize that asking servers to take one’s picture can cause a bit of consternation with the server. #Selfie

Styling at the pool. #IHStyle

Awesome day of day-drinking in Laguna Beach with B and B (using initials to protect the innocent).  Nothing better, btw. Plus, I got to try out my Spanish! For the record, I don’t speak Spanish.  🙂

One of my favorite views from one of my favorite places with four of my favorite people!  Seriously, what could be better than enjoying a Vodka/Lemonade, eating a seafood salad and looking at this view? Nothing, nothing could be better. Well maybe if the lemonade was Pink lemonade, that would have been better. 😉

The Movie Gleason.  Saw it twice in two days.  Would have made it three if it was playing near me the 3rd day. If you haven’t seen the movie, I urge you to do so.

Got to meet Steve and Michel Gleason.  Truly one of the highlights of my summer

Team Gleason

Great, great, great summer with kids.

We were also introduced to our new obsession… The Seafood Tower at Ruth’s Chris.  Totally fabulous!  Clealry, this wasn’t our first dirty martini.  Of the summer.  Or of the night.  We were already accustomed to those.  Cheers!

Patrick got a new car and Mer and I got manicures.  #WinWin

This was during the James Taylor concert at Wrigley Field!  Whenever I see your smiling face. 🙂

I also went to see Adele.  Hello!  And last concert of the summer, but certainly not least, I saw Train at Ravinia.  We stood the entire concert.  The entire concert.  Best. Concert. Ever.  Three concerts. One summer.  Not too bad.

And a boy says goodbye to his dog. Sad dog.  Sad mom.  Sad boy?  Not so much. 🙂

Song of the Day:  This’ll Be My Year, by Train

No more
Countin’ down the hours
No more
Wishin’ you were here
I stopped believin’,
Although Journey told me ‘don’t’
Before I call it a day,
Maybe this’ll be my year

And at the end of the day… It was the Best. Summer. Ever!  It was Not the best Bears game ever, btw.   I’m always surprised when they lose.  Always surprised.  Let’s hope there aren’t many more surprises in store for me this football season.

And everything will work out, just the way it’s supposed to!  For that, I am certain!

Best Quotes About Summer

5 Aug

I cannot believe we are in the last month of summer.  And yes, I’m aware that summer “officially” ends in September (typically around my birthday as a matter of fact), but with kids already heading back to college, I see summer flashing before my eyes.  It makes me very, very sad, as I know that Patrick, Mary and their friends and are in the process of moving back to school. And some very special young adults are heading to college for the first time.  Sniff, sniff!  It’s been a great summer and I still have 2 fun trips planned (FL and SoCal) but I know when those are in the bag, at least in my eyes (and in my house) summer is almost over.

Thank you Town and Country Magazine for putting the spring…I mean, summer in my step with introducing these summer quotes.

Tonight is the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics.  What’s the most ridiculous thing about the 2016 Summer Olympics, is they should be in Chicago!  Not Rio!  #EpicFail!

My all-time favorite olympic moment.  I’ve posted this before and I will post it again.  #DressedToAT.  #TeamTerry

Here is a video of Derek Redmond, running the 400M in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona.  I remember watching this “live” when it happened and knowing that I would remember this for the rest of my life.  Or 14 years later.

Happy Birthday Nancy!  Happy Birthday Matthew!  Happy Graduation party Christopher!

Enjoy your summer.  Enjoy every day.  Have a great weekend!

I would.  I really, really would.

So very wrong.
