Fifty Shades of Spring Break and Up with Peeps!

2 Apr

Still recovering from, May I say, Have Passport… Will Travel!  In other words, Fifty Shades of Spring Break!

Pardon the sun, but I was leaving and it was as sunny in Chicago as it was when we arrived in Mexico.  I learned quite a bit from my first International trip.  But that’s another blog.  A girl and her passport.  One of my favorite lines from spring break (and there were lots of them) came from Dave, when we were discussing how you really learn quite a bit about people when traveling with them (and much of it good, btw), and he said,

“I actually like you More after travelling with you”.  Smart man. It may have been the pool drinks talking, or the fact that I was lounge chair buddies with his wife, but I’ll take it.  Not only am I good at parties, but I’m fun to travel with.  Cheers! 🙂

2nd best line, not from my spring break, but it totally fits, thanks to Fun Bob:

“All inclusive resort is like a Cruise on land”.  True that.

50 shades of spring break

50 Shades of the Seniors on Spring Break, in honor of Johny B’s 50th.

Me and a few of my favorites before the waters got rough.  Really rough. #StockInDramamine

TOB POB Spring Break 2015

Me and my boy. 🙂  This is called crazy wind-blown locks.

Yes, I do believe it does.  Or at least the pool lounge chair does. 😉

So, because of my sensitive stomach and apparent intolerance to international massages and Mexican sun, #SevereDehydration, I am still recovering from my vacation.  As I Desperately need a vacation from my vacation, so am  reposting one of my favorite blogs about Peeps.  Yes, those nasty sugary-y “treats” that some people like (Cathy!) and some of us, dislike…But, it’s not Easter unless there are Peeps in the baskets.  Pink for Meredith and Blue for Patrick.

Hip, Hip, Hooray!  The long-awaited for and anticipated blog…Up with Peeps!!

Some people have, in my opinion, an unhealthy obsession with PeepsPeeps are marshmallow candies, sold in the United States and Canada, that are shaped into chicks, bunnies, and other animals (such as ducks). There are also different shapes used for various holidays. Peeps are used primarily to fill Easter baskets, though recent ad campaigns tout the candy as “Peeps – Always in Season”, as Peeps has since expanded to include Halloween, Christmas and Valentine’s Day. They are made from marshmallow, corn syrup, gelatin, and carnauba wax. (Wikipedia).

I have to admit, I have NEVER eaten a Peep.  Never.  The thought of that much sugar coming anywhere near my teeth, gives me the Heeby Jeeby’s.  However, with Easter upon us…Peeps are Everywhere.  And they’re not just for Easter baskets anymore.  Instead of a long-winded blog, I thought I’d let a few pics tell the story. 🙂

The Ultimate Peep Show

Exhausting…I know.  They do look harmless, don’t they? And to think people  spend countless hours making these…and notice how many, many of these ideas are Non-Edible.  What does that tell you?  Peeps…Pleasing to the eye, with their lovely yellow, blue and pink colors…but it’s Not necessarily a taste that the masses would like crossing their lips. But they sure are lovely to look at. 🙂  The Easter Bunny has provided Meredith and Patrick with Peeps every year for Easter, and I can tell you that NEVER have they been eaten.  But, I can also predict Peeps are here to stay, and Meredith and Patrick will also be the lucky recipients of More Peeps in their Easter Baskets!

And, in case you cannot make it to Geja’s in Chicago (one of my all-time favorite restaurants in Chicago, which is a Fondue restaurant where Kevin and I celebrated many anniversaries), you can do this at home:

Peeps Trivia…How long is the standard shelf life for Peeps?  2 years!  And each Peep is only 32 calories!  Wow.

Honestly…these are killing me.  Peeps…the other white meat! 🙂

And a Happy Easter Birthday to my very best friend, Lora!!  Which reminds me of a very snappy retort of hers.  A few years back I asked her, “I wonder what I should get the kids for Easter”…and as only she can get away with, she responded… “How about a little disappointment”?   I love her…and I do believe she was just kidding.  And I believe the message has been received!

Song of the Day:  Uptown Funk, by Bruno Mars.  For the sole reason I Cannot get that song out of my head!

This hit, that ice cold
Michelle Pfeiffer, that white gold
This one for them hood girls
Them good girls straight masterpieces
Stylin’, whilen, livin’ it up in the city
Got Chucks on with Saint Laurent
Got kiss myself, I’m so pretty

62781ecc1475cbe5aed628d15b4dcc8dTomorrow there will be a short blog about Easter Basket ideas, just in case you are still searching for ideas.  It’s a Good Friday to post a blog about Easter Baskets!

My new Netflix obsession:  Bloodline.  Been through 7 episodes and love, love, love it.  Also, if you haven’t seen Cinderella, go see it this weekend.  I took my Cinderella to see it.  Cinderella and Joel Gott Chardonnay.  Best. Movie Experience. Ever!

In case you can’t wait for tomorrow, you may check out last year’s Easter blog, An Eggcellent Easter Blog, for Everything Easter!

Counting Down to Spring Break

13 Mar

After the winter the country has had, we all deserve a spring break.  Even if you aren’t going somewhere warm and tropical, we deserve a break from this winter.  Maybe you are planning on going skiing, or taking in a fun city (like Chicago), or having a Staycation with the family…whatever you choose to do, it’s nice to know that Spring Break is but weeks away, and even less for some!  Until my senior year in college, I never went away for spring break.  My how things have changed. 🙂

Some of my very favorite memories…and moments, are from spring break!  🙂

Should You Pack It?

This is a good refresher, even for those who consider themselves “savvy packers”.

If you are going on a Beachy Spring Break

spring break 1

I always bring 2 pair of sunglasses, just in case.  And this year I will for the very first time, will be sporting a floppy beach hat!  Pic to follow.

Packing List – Fun in the Sun  – always good to have options.  I am providing Several for a Beachy Break.

One of my favorite beach tips, is using baby powder to get rid of the sand from your skin.  While I love the beach, I don’t like being sandy (yes, doesn’t make sense, but it is what it is).  Hence, I would throw in a small travel-sized container of baby powder to quickly remove excess sand.

This is so, so clever!

The above 2 infographics are really just for my own amusement.  Do not try this at home.  Or on the beach.  Or on the slopes.  And especially Not if you are not of legal drinking age.

Cover bottles with plastic wrap to keep from leaking

This clever trick can be used for more than just spring break!

Going on a City Break?

Carry On Bag – I like to use my beach tote as my carry on. #Savvy

Things I’m Bringing Along

Staycation Ideas

The point of a Staycation is to make it feel as much like a real family getaway as possible, without leaving the comfort of your own home.  Thus, to make sure the whole family is on the same page, it is good to start with some ground rules that everyone can agree on.  Start with deciding exactly when your vacation at home starts and ends, and then set a few guidelines for what your family may and may not do during this time.  These could include all or some of the following:

  • No smart phone
  • No email
  • No computer or video games
  • No television
  • No working from home
  • No worrying
  • No fighting
  • Family time only—no independent activities or outside plans
  • No cooking
  • No cleaning
  • No laundry
  • Try Paintballing or Laser Tag-Invite a few other families to join yours and battle it out for the title of Most Awesome Family.  There are paintball or laser tag facilities almost everywhere—use Google to find one nearby.
  • Visit a Nearby National Park-National parks truly are one of our country’s greatest treasures, and most NPs have a variety of awesome family friendly activities to choose from.  After finding a park in your area, first visit the Ranger Station to pick up a Junior Ranger kit, then complete the required number of activities to receive a badge.  You can also purchase a Passport to National Parks at any NP gift shop, then collect passport stamps at every park you visit.  Most park fees are nominal, but you can also check out this page to find free entrance days.
  • Enjoy Your Local Theater-Check the local newspaper or theater website to see what plays, musicals, concerts, or family-friendly comedy shows will be playing during your planned Staycation time, then book tickets and plan for an evening at the theater.
  • Visit a Nearby Amusement Park-While Disney World may not be in the cards this year, that doesn’t mean you can’t still have a blast at a nearby theme park.  Check out this list to find an amusement park in your own state or town.
  • Visit a Local Children’s Museum-If you’ve got younger kids it can sometimes be hard to find activities that the whole family can enjoy, but a great Children’s Museum can definitely fit the bill!  Most have a variety of fun and interactive activities that can keep you busy the whole day.  Check out the Association of Children’s Museums website to find one in your area, and consider purchasing a Family pass—you can usually get your money back in just two visits.
  • Visit the Zoo or Aquarium-Who doesn’t love seeing animals?  Check out the Association of Zoos & Aquariums to find an AZA accredited zoo or aquarium in your area, then be sure to also check what special programs your zoo has available.  Some offer Junior zookeeper programs or opportunities to feed the animals, while some others even allow you to spend the night in the zoo!  Be sure to pack a lunch to save on pricey zoo fare!
  • Check out the Local Library-Most libraries have family-friendly events and activities happening every weekend, and sometimes even daily during spring break and summer vacations.  Check your local library website for details.
  • Major or Minor League Sporting Event-While major league events are a lot of fun, they can get pricey quickly, especially for a family.  Luckily almost every city has a minor league team these days, which can give you (almost) the same experience for a fraction of the price!  Be sure to check out which days include special events, such as free caps or fireworks for added fun!
  • Go Bowling-If your kids are small, try bumper bowling; for older kids go at night during “glow bowling” times!  Many bowling alleys around the country even participate in a free bowling program that allows kids to bowl free and parents to join them for just a few dollars more.
  • Camp in Your Own Backyard-Why not enjoy the great outdoors in your own backyard?  Set up a tent and sleeping bags, build a fire (or use the grill) to cook s’mores, and take turns telling ghost stories.  Then download the Night Sky app (make sure your device is GPS-enabled first!) to identify stars, planets, and even satellites in the sky.
  • Tour a Local Factory or Brewery-Is there a large manufacturing facility near your town or city?  Most offer tours and even samples of their goods.  Check the company website for details!
  • Visit a Nearby Tourist Spot-Is there an area nearby that always draws the crowds? Even if you normally avoid the tourist traps, every once in a while it is fun to become a tourist in your own town.  Make all the cheesy stops and take pictures along the way!
  • Theme Restaurant or Dinner Theater-Make dining an event!  Depending on where you live there may be theme restaurants, dinner theater, or even a murder-mystery dinner train or cruise
  • Go Paddleboarding or Canoeing-If there is a river, lake, or ocean nearby, chances are pretty good there is also a paddleboard or canoe rental facility nearby as well.   Both are a fun way to enjoy the water and test your skills!
  • Create Your Own Art-Spend an afternoon getting creative at a nearby paint-your-own pottery facility.  Not only is it fun, you’ll have your own gorgeous dishes to take home when you’re done.
  • Get Wet-Spend the day at a local pool or waterpark, or just head to the beach!  If that sounds like too much effort, simply set up a slip & slide in the backyard and have a family water day at home.
  • Tackle a family project-Have the kids been begging for a tree house or wanting to redecorate their rooms?  Consider spending your week together working on something to improve your home.  You’ll not only bond while painting and building together, but at the end of the week have something concrete to show for your time!
  • Host Your Own Film Festival-Pick a theme, allow each family member to pick a movie, then get comfortable for a day of movies.  Be sure to provide plenty of snacks, and take breaks to discuss and rate each film.
  • Give Yourselves a Makeover-Do hair and makeup at home, or take a day to go to the local spa or beauty parlor.  Complete the new look with a new outfit!
  • Find a Local Festival-Check your local newspaper or chamber of commerce website to find out what is happening in your town or towns nearby the week of your Staycation.  Depending where you live there are often events happening almost every weekend!
  • Go Golfing-If dad is into real golf, consider spending an afternoon doing a family golf lesson; otherwise, stick to mini golf at a local novelty course!
  • Play Outside-Go fly a kite, take a walk, go for a bike ride, or take a hike–most state and national parks have at least a few walking, hiking, or biking trails to choose from.  Do a little research to find one that fits your family’s athletic ability, then head out to enjoy the great outdoors.  Don’t forget to pack snacks and water for your trek!

The key here is no Uggs.  I think I have seen just about enough of my Uggs.  Even if I were going skiing this break, I’d leave my Uggs at home.

I start out writing a short, snappy blog…and next thing I know, I’m at 1700 words and counting!  Yikes.

Have a happy weekend!  Next week is St. Patrick’s Day and there will be a blog to celebrate it!  And what better way to end the blog than a Maxie Moment of the Week! Her favorite color is also Pink!

Coming off a wonderful Spring Break (and don’t worry Shannon, I won’t boast about the weather, view, food, libations, company…;)) and definitely need to get “back on the wagon”, or back on track…so I need these refreshers myself!

50 habits

Song of the Day…Never gonna give you up, by Rick Astley.  Is it just me, or does it Totally look like he’s lip syncing?! 😉

My favorite pic from spring break…me and Paddy, having a fabulous dinner, at our very favorite resort, ever…Resort at Pelican Hill…OMG…I cannot say enough great things about it.  So, I’ll just stop here.  You are welcome, Shannon! 😉

My favorite “Terryism” from spring break

Arriving at Hertz rental car Gold area.

HERTZ:  Mrs. O’Brien, we have a Dodge Caravan for you.

Terry:  I don’t think so.

Here’s Patrick in front of the car we drove off with…a Mercedes E350.  As my brother, Mark, the mayor said, I should have said, “Clearly, you don’t read my blog”.  Clearly, they don’t. But I still got the Mercedes. As my friend Tracy said, “the story of your life”.  Well, yeah, sometimes…:)

My favorite, view, ever, ever, ever!!!

Yes, I touched OJ Simpson’s Heisman… USC had to remove Reggie Bush’s Heisman, but still shows OJ’s.  Hmmm… I touched it anyway…and I’m speaking of The Heisman!

Arriving home, super late at night, and delighted to wake up to this text.  How happy and proud am I of Mer Mer…Where’s the Challenge?  Smart and funny…love that girl!!

And back home, back to reality…re-entry, hasn’t been half bad.  A special shout out, and thank you to 2 great friends, and industry pals, Donna Bongi and Deidre R. , who both came up to me this week to tell me how much they like (let’s say Love) my blog.  So while, I do know I get much more enjoyment out of writing this blog, than anyone can possibly get reading it…I do get Tickled Pink, to know people actually do enjoy, and look forward to reading it!

And speaking of Tickled Pink…thinking this Kate Spade watch, with Tickled Pink inscribed inside, has my name, All over it… (Mer get with Dad, ASAP!)

Happy Birthday weekend, to my beautiful sister, Megan!

Spend a day just hanging out with people.

Don’t go out, don’t watch movies, just talk. Heart-to-hearts have a way of making us smile, no matter what your talks end up being about. It’s a great way to spend time with those hometown BFF’s too (keeping those friendships are lifesaving).

Buy at least one article of clothing for summer.

Prepping for summer is the best way to pretend winter isn’t still among us. Get your mind out of this wondrous weather and intosummer! 🙂 Maybe even get rid of some old clothes you don’t wear too.

Have a home-spa day.

Whether this means alone or with friends, have fun and just chill at home. Relaxing. Nail painting. Face masks. All that good, girly stuff.

Take a good shower.

If your college is anything like mine, which I assume it is in this way, your showers probably aren’t the best so just take a nice, long, warm, undisturbed shower at home.

Have a movie day with your family.

They miss you and I assume you miss them, so spend some time actually in the same room and just laugh with them.

Start your own blog!

Join me and make your own blog! It’s a great thing to do and gets your mind off the crazy, stressful times we so enjoy {cough, sarcasm} at college. You can even follow me! 🙂

Have a backyard camp night with your best friends!

Once again, it’s probably not warm enough to go outside, but if it is…
Friends from high school are in just the same position you are, so set up tents or something and have a “night out” with your friends. Take a laptop out even, and have a movie night outside.
If it’s not warm enough: do it in a {warm} basement or a something!
