Step away from that lipstick

13 Jan

A very dear friend of mine showed me a lipstick she had received from a friend as a gift.  YSL…Rouge Pur.  Bubble gum pink is the best way to describe this color. It was a cream lipstick, not a gloss.   The photo below is actually being too kind to this color.  The color was actually the color of the cover of my iPad.  Not the color one should be aiming for. Mrs. X said she and her friend used to use this lipstick when they were 20…Mrs. X and her friend are now looking at 45 in the rear-view mirror.  Because of its “harsh” color, Mrs. X would dab is ever so lightly on her lips, and cover it with a heavy clear gloss.  Hmmm…Didn’t really help.   She asked my opinion of it, and I said, “Step away from that lipstick”.  She handed it to me, and has never looked back, until she reads today’s blog post. 🙂

Just because some one gives you a lipstick as a gift, does Not mean you need to wear it. 🙂

Ladies, there are very few colors in lipstick that have transcended generations…and  YSL Rouge Pur is not one of them!

“If I had to teach someone just one thing about lip color it would be this: Find a lipstick that looks good on your face when you are wearing absolutely no makeup.” — Bobbi Brown, “Beauty”

While picking the right shade can be as easy as going a couple of shades darker than your natural lip color, you can delve just a wee bit deeper in the science of shades and skin tone.

Women with fair skin, look great in lipstick shades such as nudes in a slightly apricot shade, pinks and light corals. Stay away from browns, which will appear blah.

Those with a medium skin tone can go a bit darker. You’ll look great in roses, mauves and berries. Skip the bright reds and consider a deep burgundy instead.

Deep plum, chocolate or red is fabulous with dark or black skin. Women with dark skin “can go in one of two directions: toward brown or purple. Think caramel or walnut for day, and plum or wine for evening.”

Lipstick! Would probably one of a handful of things I’d bring on a deserted island. Can’t live without it (with some gloss over, the best). Need them in the car, in my coat, in my desk, in my purse, etc. Love a basic red tone, and have not found many brands I don’t like. Does one type really “last all day”? Happy Friday!

T – Great blog. So many choose the wrong lip color and this will help to set them straight. You are the wise one! 🙂
